What a Woman Should Have.

30 Things Every Woman Should Have and Should Know by the Time She's 30
This 1997 Glamour article has become a popular web chain letter, usually titled “Maya Angelou’s Best Poem Ever.” Glamour contributor Pamela Redmond Satran is flattered, but she wrote the list, updating it in 2005.

Is 21 Too Young to Start Obsessing About Wrinkles? My Friends Spend Hundreds of $$$ on Anti-Aging Products

In May of 1997, I wrote this list. I had passed my thirtieth birthday and wanted to tell younger women about the things I really wished I’d had and known by that important milestone. I guess people agreed with what I had to say, because a few years later the list showed up in my e-mail inbox; a friend had forwarded it to me for my reading pleasure, completely unaware that I was the author. After that, every month or two someone would send it to me and I’d immediately hit “reply all” and type, “Hey, that was me! I wrote that for Glamour.” (After a while, I don’t think anyone believed me.) The list became a phenomenon; posted on hundreds of websites, it was attributed to everyone from Jesse Jackson to Maya Angelou to Hillary Clinton. Someone even published it as an anonymously written book. As I read over these lines now, so many of them still seem worth having and knowing—whether you’re 30 or 22 or 75. Being a little older and a little wiser, I’ve plugged in a few new “shoulds.” By all means, add some of your own.
By 30, you should have:

   1. One old boyfriend you can imagine going back to and one who reminds you of how far you’ve come.
   2. A decent piece of furniture not previously owned by anyone else in your family.
   3. Something perfect to wear if the employer or man of your dreams wants to see you in an hour.
   4. A purse, a suitcase and an umbrella you’re not ashamed to be seen carrying.
   5. A youth you’re content to move beyond.
   6. A past juicy enough that you’re looking forward to retelling it in your old age.
   7. The realization that you are actually going to have an old age—and some money set aside to help fund it.
   8. An e-mail address, a voice mailbox and a bank account—all of which nobody has access to but you.
   9. A résumé that is not even the slightest bit padded.
  10. One friend who always makes you laugh and one who lets you cry.
  11. A set of screwdrivers, a cordless drill and a black lace bra.
  12. Something ridiculously expensive that you bought for yourself, just because you deserve it.
  13. The belief that you deserve it.
  14. A skin-care regimen, an exercise routine and a plan for dealing with those few other facets of life that don’t get better after 30.
  15. A solid start on a satisfying career, a satisfying relationship and all those other facets of life that do get better.

By 30, you should know:

   1. How to fall in love without losing yourself.
   2. How you feel about having kids.
   3. How to quit a job, break up with a man and confront a friend without ruining the friendship.
   4. When to try harder and when to walk away.
   5. How to kiss in a way that communicates perfectly what you would and wouldn’t like to happen next.
   6. The names of: the secretary of state, your great-grandmother and the best tailor in town.
   7. How to live alone, even if you don’t like to.
   8. How to take control of your own birthday.
   9. That you can’t change the length of your calves, the width of your hips or the nature of your parents.
  10. That your childhood may not have been perfect, but it’s over.
  11. What you would and wouldn’t do for money or love.
  12. That nobody gets away with smoking, drinking, doing drugs or not flossing for very long.
  13. Who you can trust, who you can’t and why you shouldn’t take it personally.
  14. Not to apologize for something that isn’t your fault.
  15. Why they say life begins at 30.

Treasure

I want to invest on jewelry soon. After I get my finances and priority in order I might get myself gold jewelry. Im thinking of getting a set for me – earrings, necklace and bracelet. Or I can get myself a set of pearls. My dream would be to own diamond earrings someday. If you want to invest in gold, make sure you get it from a reputable company. The Monex Group of Companies is one. Resources and contacts like these enable an expert like Monaco Rare Coin to help you locate the best, highest-quality rare coins available at best prices, thereby maximizing your rare coin investment dollars.

Wedding

A second cousin of mine will have a beach wedding in the pristine beaches of Boracay two weeks from now. They will be having their reception at the Discovery Suites. We would not be able to come, as it will be very expensive (The hotel charges rates in US Dollars). I had a destination wedding too but it wasn’t by the beach. It seems that destination weddings is still the way to go celebrate one’s wedding in style! I would want to have a wedding and honeymoon in the Caribbean! The El Dorado Royale Resort is perfect for honeymooners!

El Dorado Seaside Suites, on the secluded white sand beach of Kantenah in the heart of the Riviera Maya, is relaxed, casual, but rich in design detail and sensual extras. I want to be there!

Books for the Bosses

I cant believe how busy I am these days. And this has to be said for a mommy who stays at home, works from home, takes care of the kids and doesnt even have the time to take a decent bath sometimes. On most days. I don't want to sound as I’m complaining though – I love that I am able to have this chance to stay at home and be the one to take care of my kids and still be able to earn some money to help with the household expenses. It can get overwhelming everytime it’s the end of the month!

Why am I saying this – well, I just finished watching a feature on TV about a top level executive of a big company. A camera was supposedly following him everywhere, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. And he can be really busy!! What I actually found out is that despite being busy he can still be on top of the current trends of management and specific fields because of digests he subscribes too. Executive Book Summaries can be a lifesaver! They can be bought in different formats so he can just get PDF files put it in his Blackberry and not carry a book all the time!

Shoot the Wedding

So I got an e-mail again from somebody I don’t know. They chanced upon my wedding blog and they fell in love with my wedding photographer supplier’s work. They inquired about their work and the output and production of the album. Of course I gave them a very favorable rating – my best supplier from the wedding was our photographers. Local Wedding Photographers are abundant these days, you can find them on directories of wedding-related websites like The Knot. However, I strongly suggest you become acquainted with their work first and decide if their style is something you want to be reflected on your wedding. Remember, the photos are what will be left after everything else is done! Invest on it!

DO YOU BELIEVE IN:

1. Yourself → Yes of course. There are times I doubt but I try to be really confident of who I am.
2. Love at first sight → Attraction at first sight!
3. Heaven → yup!
4. Santa Claus → No but we keep him alive for our kids.
5. Sex on the first date? → it's a no, no!

ANSWER TRUTHFULLY:
6. Is there one person you want to be with right now? → Ate
7. Are you seriously happy with where you are in life? → Not really.
8. Do you believe in God → YES!

For the Love of Arts

Well, specifically my son’s artwork.

I am in a bit of a dilemna. My son has been doing artwork ever since he was three years old. He is now 8 years old. All his doodles, crafts, art projects from school – everything – are kept. Most are in large brown envelopes while quite a few are in boxes. I have filtered them more than you can count my fingers and I' still can’t keep them into a decent number. I once tried taking pictures of them and scanning some so I can throw more away but I miss the texture and authenticity of his pages. What to do? I need a very effective, durable art storage system and location because these are priceless.

Did you know that most art pieces you seen in galleries and museums are insured by millions? They are also stored very well, most of them are stored under controlled temperatures (certain paintings lose their color at specific temperatures). I would like to think of my son’s art pieces that way. I want to store them in a way that it will stand through time so his children and his children’s children will be able to enjoy it. My son has real talent when it comes to drawing and I want to remember it – if the time comes he will pursue another hobby.

Payback Time

It’s payback time. I have been shopping a little bit the past two months, even if I’ve been saying I’ve been saving. Jinx has a lot to do with my savings being wiped out – my wisdom teeth needs to get extracted and it’s going to cost me. Big Time. As an online friend said, it is simply a law of attraction. More money coming in means more spending. Not necessarily the spending I would want (aka shopping) though. It’s a good thing I don’t have any credit cards or else I’d be up to ears in debt!! I love  that I can pay things in cold hard cash these days. Well, that isn’t entirely true since I shop overseas. A friend cards my purchases and I pay her within the month so her card won’t rake interest charges. (She can qualify as my personal shopper, seriously!)

If I had a credit card, someone from the Collection Agency is sure to call me. I harbor no ill feeling for collection agents really – I know they are just doing their job and trying to earn some commission but some can really be downright rude and offending. Some even have the nerve to threaten! It is good that a law has been passed about this making it illegal for them to make empty threats and call during weekends and very early mornings (they did that to me before!).

It's the Love Month

Got this here.

1. Do you believe in love at first sight? No.
2. Have you ever been given a teddy bear? Yep. First gift from then-boyfriend-now-husband
3. What are your all-time favorite love story movie? Love Affair
4. Are you in love right now? Very much!
5. Do you believe that everyone has a soul mate? Yes.
6. Have you ever had your heart broken? Yes.
7. Your thoughts on online or long distance relationships? It needs a lot of work, trust, and communication. But it “can” work.
8. Have you ever seen a friend as more than a friend? No.
9. Who is your celebrity crush? Gong Yoo, forever and ever!
10. Do you believe you truly only love once? Nope.

Hooked on Facebook?

Yesiree.

Count me in among those who consider Facebook cool and has added “facebooking” into her official writing and speaking dictionary. And this is saying a lot – consider I have accounts on Friendster, MySpace and even Multiply but have never been that active. Consider me a constant lurker-slash-stalker. So why do I ‘facebook’ a lot? Well, for one, I love how it is connected to my Flickr account. I am very very lazy when it comes to uploading pictures – I upload them all in my Flickr account and don’t care to upload them anywhere else. It has become an incovenience as most my relatives don’t even know what Flickr is. Enter Facebook and they can finally be updated on how my kids look. Hurray for me and hurray for my kids.

Second, I love that I am able to really interact with “friends” – it gives new meaning to the word social networking for me. Learning from my mistakes from previous social networking accounts, I try to keep my facebook account strictly “friends” only. I have connected with high school friends who work from various companies like manhattan it services to New York hospitals. It is amazing how we have come this far, led different lives and can still try to be friends.

Third, this might sound silly, but the games and applications there are downright addicting! Try it!

Debt and then Some.

It’s the day for people who sell flowers and hotel management staff and restaurateurs to make some good money. It’s Valentine’s Day and I’m sure commercialism for anything romantic will reach their all-time high. With skyrocketing prices for flowers, cards, valet service, concerts, promos for hotel accommodations and fine dining, I’m still amazed how people can spend and go out today. And still they claim that the economy is bad. I wonder how many will charge today’s activities to their credit cards?

Maybe you can call me the Valentine Grouch. However, I would like to think of myself as being very practical. After all, we really should be. Times are hard. All of us are uncertain how tomorrow will be with our jobs, those that even still have jobs. It will be better to pay off debt as soon as you have extra cash lying around. That way, debt collection agencies won’t hound and pester you. Have you ever experienced that? I have and I swore off credit cards for good! This time around, I’m smarter so whatever credit card balance we have we automatically pay off so we won’t be raking in huge interest.

So yes, Happy Valentine’s :)

Marketing

I am continually amazed and stunned at how advertising can really influence people, specifically shoppers and consumers. Why, if you think about it, most goods these days are now identified with one brand, people go as far as saying, “I need to go buy more Colgate” instead of saying “I need to go buy more toothpaste.” Inasmuch as I would like to believe that these famous brands are effective and of high quality, I need to give credit to the geniuses behind its marketing and advertising teams. Their planning, scheming, advertising and follow-up are undeniably effective.

I would like to know more about the advertising geniuses behind Coca-Cola’s ads. I always look forward to what they will have next and I often find myself very amused and impressed with their latest ads. Even their billboard and print posters are amazing.

One more company I admire are the geniuses behind Nike’s campaign – with everything going online, their websites with flash animation is to die for. Marketing Company giants that do these brand identity campaigns will make millions just by creating brilliant ads. I am so sure every business will go online sooner or later. The internet and the whole world wide web is considered the “mainstream” these days.

I made a lovely discovery today. You better check out HolstedJewelers.com. There are so many nice choices of Designer Jewelry at HolstedJewelers.com. I was able to go to Disneyland in California when I was 16. I enjoyed it a lot but didn’t get to finish the whole of Disneyland. I really wish I can go back, this time with my whole family in tow. I am sure my kids will love Disneyland. It really is a place of magic. A friend of mine even went as far as having Disneyland as her theme for her wedding. Her used to be boyfriend (now her husband) would often take her out on dates in Disneyland. In fact they even had annual passes for themselves!

And you know what made their wedding extremely memorable? They had their reception at the Disneyland Hotel too! And what better gift than to give them a piece of Disney Stock as a wedding present? You can get one for yourself or for your loved one at www.uniquestockgift.com or  www.disneystock.com. They will receive a certificate in a white lacquered frame with the choice of having favorite classic Walt Disney characters like Dumbo, Bambi, Winney the Pooh, Donald Duck, Pinochio, Cinderella and of course Mickey Mouse gracing the certificate! This would be a great idea for baptism gifts and most importantly baby showers – imagine a baby yet to be born already part of the magic of Disney!

Careers

Aries
Aries is the youngest sign in the zodiac. There is a reason the sign is represented by a ram—Aries are strong (and strong-willed), vibrant, enthusiastic, and competitive. They thrive in commission-based jobs, especially if there is a bonus involved. Due to their bravery (and their impulsivity), they are the heroes of our lives—the police officers and firefighters. They are excellent promoters and may find the world of advertising and public relations appeals to their outgoing nature. Best jobs: entrepreneur, soldier, rescue worker; work well in the fields of government and politics, television, and recreation.

Taurus
One of the things a Taurus enjoys most is stability. They will work very hard for certain guarantees—good benefits, vacation time, salary, job security. Determined, patient, honest, and methodical, they are excellent team members and extremely dependable. Taurians have a fondness for beautiful things and love working with flowers, food, jewelry, and luxury items. They are also known for their clear, strong voices and do well as an announcer, public speaker, or receptionist. Best jobs: accountant, educator, engineer, lawyer, designer, landscaper, chef.

Gemini
Want to make a Gemini happy? Give her plenty to do and make it intellectually stimulating. Remember that Geminis are twins, which means you have to engage two people, so they need to have a lot going on and like fast-paced, pressured environments. They won’t survive long doing tedious or repetitive work. Jobs that require travel are perfect, as are jobs that require social networking. Geminis are optimistic and full of energy—they should be encouraged to let go and express themselves rather than be confined to traditional rules. Best jobs: stockbroker, switchboard operator, technical support, teacher, architect, machine operator, rescue worker.

Cancer
Cancer is the mother of the zodiac (Capricorn is the father), so these sensitive types do well in jobs that require nurturing or taking care of things. However, this isn’t just about working with children or puppies; Cancerians make excellent executives, much like a multi-tasking mom who’s in charge. Cancerians give great advice and are very protective. They handle responsibility with ease and are imaginative problem solvers. Best jobs: gardener, social worker, childcare, human resources, lawyer, teacher, CEO, soldier.

Leo
Nothing like a mighty lion to lead your company into success and high profits. Fearless, inspiring, and independent, Leos work best when they are in the spotlight and love jobs that bring status and power. They can be high-maintenance and disruptive to a team environment, but their charm usually wins everyone over in the end. Not to be micro-managed, Leos possess spontaneity and ingenuity and do well when encouraged to lead instead of follow. Best jobs: CEO, performer, tour guide, real estate agent, interior decorator, fashion designer, government, saleperson.

Virgo
Virgos are known for their perfectionism and do very well in detailed-oriented professions. They remember things, excel at abstract thinking, and are very tidy and neat. Many Virgos do well in service-type jobs—you would be very happy with a Virgo manicurist or server (plus Virgos tend to make more money when working for tips). Writing, research, and statistics come easy to the meticulous Virgo brain. They are also easy to get along with as they are generally very cheerful. Many Virgos have a knack for languages. Best jobs: editor/writer, teacher, critic, technician, translator, detective, statistician.

Libra
Libras—what would we do without them? They are good-looking and charming, gracious and entertaining. Their cooperative nature makes them excellent ambassadors and team leaders. If you ever have to deal with customer service over the phone, it will go much smoother if the operator is a Libra. More so than any sign, Libras are people people. They are not the type to slave away in some dark room; they thrive in buzzing, social environments. Many Libras gravitate toward the arts and will most likely be the lead singer of a band, interacting with the audience, rather than a brooding songwriter. Best jobs: diplomat, dancer, salesperson, host, negotiator, travel agent, supervisor.

Scorpio
Intense—that’s what they are. Need a bomb diffused? How about complicated brain surgery? Trust me, you want a Scorpio for the job. Scorpios are able to block out distractions, concentrate, and focus like a laser beam. They are curious and are often drawn to mysteries—you would never want to be cross-examined or interrogated by a Scoripo for they are not only intimidating, but also very intuitive. Scorpios are also drawn to the abnormal and they like to know what makes things tick. (Think Fox Mulder on The X-Files.) Just don’t hover around them—they need their independence and their employer’s trust. Best jobs: detective, lawyer, educator, scientist, surgeon, physicist.

Sagittarius
Sagittarians are ethical, full of energy, and rather philosophical. They are excellent decision-makers and make fair and easygoing bosses. Many Sagittarians are spiritual, which can translate well into careers involving the environment, animals, and counseling, as well as religion. They also love to travel and be outdoors. Outgoing and fun-loving, they are likable and witty coworkers who can defuse tense situations with humor and tact. They will not be tied down or bothered with the little details. Routine kills their spirit. Best jobs: minister, animal trainer, editor, public relations, coach, and anything having to do with travel.

Capricorn
Capricorns are very ambitious and need challenges to be happy. Just like the mountain goat climbs on the tiniest crags to get to the top, Capricorns are determined and persistent—they will do what whatever it takes. Most are responsible and conscientious; many enjoy power. They run a tight ship—they will enforce rules and keep everyone on schedule. If you need something done right (and to exact standards), look no further than a Capricorn. They also tend to be workaholics. Best jobs: manager, administrator, editor, banker, IT, and anything science-related.

Aquarius
The quality that sets Aquarians apart from everyone else is their humanitarian nature (it’s also why they are flighty in matters of the heart, but that’s another story). They love to explore avant-garde ideas and have a curious and adventurous nature. They are the most likely to have an unconventional job, maybe even one of their making. They will rebel against corporate environments, needing freedom of thought and movement. They will not be satisfied doing things the same way they have always been done. If you need a fresh approach, an Aquarius will not let you down. Best jobs: scientist (if they can explore new theories), inventor, organic farmer, aviator, designer, musician.

Pisces
Pisces is the oldest sign in the zodiac and many Pisceans have that “old soul” feel about them. The key words here are creative and passionate. They excel in the traditional arts (music, dance, photography). Pisceans are also highly intuitive. If your stylist is a Pisces, she will not only give you a modern and unique haircut; she will also give you the haircut that fits you best. Many astrologers and tarot practitioners are Pisces. Their intuition also helps in fields that require compassion. Best jobs: artist, nurse, physical therapist, philanthropist, veterinarian, psychologist.
